How Does a GPS Mobile Work ?
What and we just handling the GPS system with our mobile but no one thinks how it works the GPS is. Now we are going to discuss about GPS. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which provides the exact position and time anywhere on the earth. This has been designed with 24 satellites that orbit at 11000 nautical miles above the earth. Usually this GPS is used for automotive navigation and wireless applications.
To function a GPS there are three major chips to the navigation. The chips are Colossus – PMB 3330 – 8R, IO – PMB 2500 and Hammerhead II – PMB – 2525.
Colossus – PMB 3330 – 8R:
This Colossus PMB 330-8R is a tightly integrated, single chip and a dual conversion radio receiver with pseudo I/Q outputs. This has a programmable frequency synthesizer for referencing two clock frequencies, a low noise amplifier, two built in samplers and power down circuitry. This chip has been designed to work with IO-12 channel GPS Correlator IC.
Features:
•High integration, e.g. fully integrated VCO

•P-TSSOP 24 or PG-VQFN 24 package available
•4 power-saving modes
•Low power consumption: <20 mW (2.7V)
•Extended operating temperature: -40° – 85° Celsius
•4 power-saving modes
IO – PMB 2500:
The Correlator IC gives an output of GPS measurement data to host a microprocessor, the host system will use this data for computing the position, velocity, and time solutions. In this IO 12 channels has been designed to enable parallel tracking of the GPS.
this IO 12 channels has been designed to enable parallel tracking of the GPS.
Features:
•12 channels
•Extended operating temperature: -40° – 85° Celsius
•Ease of integration with standard serial interface
•Few external components for lowest bill of material
•13MHz and 12.504 MHz frequency plan
•J-TAG Boundary Scan
•Ultra low power consumption: < 8mW (3.3V)
•4 power saving-modes
•P-TSSOP 28 or PG-VQFN 40 package available
Hammerhead™ II – PMB 2525:
This is the smallest size and highest in performance provider in GPS receiver. This is additionally used in printing a new benchmark for high performance in positioning and to navigation into mobile functions. This chip size is 3.59 x 3.74 mm2 now provides facilities to integrate into miniaturized mobile concepts.
