News: HP VirtualSystem and VMware View deliver secure mobile productivity

In order to support the business, the global and mobile workface is changing the demands on IT. Besides, young workers are also changing the expectations on how IT delivers the data and the applications.
During earlier times, Windows applications and user role were tethered to the desktop. However, it is pretty much challenging to manage these for a distributed workface with multiple computing devices. Therefore, in this new world, the collaboration like eLearning, remote applications and unified communications (like Instant Messaging and video conferencing) is transforming the way users work.

Now-a-days, the security breaches have become the major concern and no matter what kind of end-point device is being used. In the year 2010, Ponemon Institute (in an Intel commissioned study) reported $6.4 million average annual cost for lost business laptops. In order to lower the desktop costs, most of the companies are following the Bring Your Own Device (or BYOD) strategy. Although, this concept may lower the costs of purchasing the desktops and the laptops, the challenges on the other side to manage the multi-OS devices require a new model that is capable of working for both the end users and IT.
The upshot is that IT has to clinch desktop transformation for enabling the workers to access their data on and from many different devices anywhere and anytime. In such cases, the solution from HP and VMware really works out. If your Smartphone, tablet or laptop is lost or stolen, no company information will be exposed.
Therefore, it will be a better option if you go with virtualization desktop with VMware vSphere and View rather struggling to meet the needs of new business paradigm with an older computer.
VMware and HP bring this important move to the client virtualization safe and easy by delivering the tested solutions sized for specific work loads. By using the HP’s client virtualization solutions with VMware View, you can get a secure and end-to-end solution from the end point device to back-end datacenter infrastructure.
The HP VirtualSystem CV2 with VMware View solution is delivered with pre-tested, pre-configured using HP Factory Express to save your time with assessment, design, ordering, configuring, installing and optimizing. Besides, HP Insight Control for VMware vCenter is an integrated management solution that proactively manages the changes with the detailed insight into the relationship between the physical and virtual infrastructure.
HP and VMware understand all of the steps required to get to desktop transformation. HP VirtualSystem CV2 with VMware View reduces the complexity of deploying client virtualization. Standardize on a common virtualization platform with VMware View, vSphere and HP industry-standard components and get from concept to production to value faster than ever before.

AD CS: Authority information access locations

This is article is applicable to Windows Server 2008 R2. This article will be very helpful in order to address a specific issue identified by a Best Practices Analyzer scan. The main thing to remember is that you can use this procedure only on the computers that have the Active Directory Certificate Services Best Practices Analyzer run against them and are experiencing the issue addressed by this topic.

Operating System

Windows Server 2008 R2

Product/Feature

Active Directory Certificate Services

Severity

Warning

Category

Configuration

Issue
The other thing to remember is that the Certification Authority isn’t configured to comprise the authority information access locations in the extension of issued certificates. Moreover, the authority information access extension provides the network location of the issuing CA’s certificate.

Impact
Clients may not be able to locate the issuing CA’s certificate to build a certificate chain, and certificate validation may fail.

Certificate validation is critical to a correctly functioning public key infrastructure (PKI). For a valid certificate, a certification path that leads to a trusted root certificate is required. In order to build a certification path, the issuing CA’s certificate is retrieved by CryptoAPI, which reads the authority information access extension of issued certificates to identify the network location of the CA’s certificate. Remember that if the extension doesn’t include the location of the CA certificate, the certificate validation can’t be completed. Moreover, the applications that require the certificate may fail.
Resolution
You can use the Certification Authority snap-in to configure the authority information access extension and specify the network location of the issuing CA’s certificate. During the CA installation, the default locations of the CA certificate will be added to the authority information access extension settings. Moreover, the CA is configured to include the default locations in the extensions of all issued certificates. You can use the following procedure to add the valid locations and configure them to be included in issued certificates when the default locations aren’t present or valid.
How to configure authority information access extension settings?
1. Open the Certification Authority snap-in.
2. First, it is required to open the Certification Authority snap-in.
3. Then, it is required to right click the CA and then select Properties.
4. After that, click the Extension tab.
5. Now, in the Select Extension tab, select Authority Information Access.
6. If you find that the Specify locations list doesn’t include a valid location for the CA certificate, click Add to open the Add Location dialog box.
7. After that, type a valid location and click OK.
8. Repeat the same for multiple locations.
9. Then, in the Specify Locations list, it is required to click a location and then select the Include in the Authority Information Access Extension of Issued Certificates check box.
10. Now, click OK to save changes.
11. The Active Directory Certificate Services must be restarted for the changes to take the effect.

Troubleshoot: Event ID 1017 - Performance Library Availability

In this article, let’s discuss about the Performance Counters. They’re available as built-in to the operating system and from the non-Microsoft vendors. Both are combined and available in the Performance Library. Windows Reliability and Performance Monitor are some of the Performance Monitoring applications and they’re using the Performance Library to identify the available counters to map to the counter providers. Errors accessing the Performance Library may result in application errors when expected data cannot be found, or when expected data providers are unavailable.
Let’s have the below example.
Event Details

Product:

Windows Operating System

ID:

1017

Source:

Microsoft-Windows-Perflib

Version:

6.1

Symbolic Name:

PERFLIB_LIBRARY_DISABLED

Disabled performance counter data collection from the “%1!s!” service because the performance counter library for that service has generated one or more errors. The errors that forced this action have been written to the application event log. Correct the errors before enabling the performance counters for this service.

Diagnosing the cause
Following are the possible causes:
• A non-Microsoft DLL caused the error.
• The list of counters is corrupt.
• The Remote Registry service is not running on a remote system.
• The File and Printer Sharing firewall exception is not enabled on a remote system running Windows Vista.
• The application is running as a user with insufficient privileges.

A non-Microsoft DLL caused the error
You can follow the steps provided in the section titled “Contact a vendor” to obtain a newer copy of the DLL file.

The list of counters is corrupt
The registry might be corrupted, if the performance counter isn’t able to unload the strings for the specified service. If you wish to correct this problem, you can go with the steps provided in the section “Rebuild the list of available counters.”

The Remote Registry service is not running on a remote system
On the destination system, the Remote Registry service must be running in order to collect the performance counters remotely. Membership in the destination system’s local Administrators group is required to change the service settings.
How to check if the Remote Registry service is running?

1. On the destination system, click Start.
2. First, click Start on the destination system.
3. Then, type compmgmt.msc in the search box and then press the Enter key to open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) window.
4. Now, in the navigation tree, it is required to expand the “Services and Applications” and then select Services.
5. After that, select Remote Registry from the services list.
6. Then, check if the status of the Remote Registry service is started.
7. If not, you can resolve the error by selecting the “Enable the Remote Registry” service.
The File and Printer Sharing firewall exception should be enabled on the destination system as it isn’t enabled on the computers running Windows Vista.
Membership in the destination computer’s local Administrators group is required to change firewall settings.
How to check File and Printer Sharing firewall exception settings?
1. Open the Control Panel on the destination system from the start menu.
2. Now, select firewall by typing it in the search box.
3. After that, double click Windows Firewall.
4. Now, click on Change Settings.
5. Then, it is required to check if File and Printer sharing is selected on the Exceptions tab.
6. If it is not, follow the steps in the section titled “Enable the File and Printer Sharing firewall exception on a remote system running Windows Vista” to resolve the error.
The application is running as a user with insufficient privileges
In order to view the performance counters, you should be a member of the local Performance Monitor Users group, Performance Log Users Group, Administrators group or equivalent. Applications that run as a user or system account with insufficient privileges may not be able to load performance counters correctly. Follow the steps in the section titled “Run the application as a user with sufficient privileges” to identify a resolution.
How to resolve
To resolve this issue, use the resolution that corresponds to the cause you identified in the Diagnose section. After performing the resolution, see the Verify section to confirm that the feature is operating properly.

Contact a vendor
The first option is that you can contact the vendor who provided the performance counter DLLs.
Rebuild the list of performance counters
It is required to have the membership in the local Administrators group to complete the following the steps.
To rebuild the list of counters in the registry:
1. Click Start, expand All Programs, and expand Accessories.
2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
3. At the command prompt, type lodctr /r, and then press ENTER.
Re-enable a required DLL
Now, let’s discuss about enabling the performance library DLL. Make sure that you’ve the membership in the local Administrator group to perform these steps.
1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.
2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
3. At the command prompt, type lodctr /e: and then press ENTER, where is the name of the library, for example “PerfOS”. The DLL name is found in the event message details.
How to run the application as a user with sufficient privileges?
By default, an application runs with the same privileges as the user who started it. However, you can configure the services to run as the local system account or as a specific user. You can also start an application as Administrator, but in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 with User Account Control enabled, you must confirm that you want to start the application each time it runs if it is configured to run as Administrator.
Consider running services that collect performance counter data as the local system account to resolve privilege issues. If for security reasons you do not want to run the application or service as the local system account, you can add the user the application runs as to the Performance Log Users group and assign the group the Log on as a Batch Job user right to enable performance counter collection each time the application runs.
Make sure that you’re a member of the destination computer’s local administrator group to do the following steps.
Add a user to the Performance Log Users group
1. As we discussed above, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type compmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER.
2. Now, it is required to expand System Tools and Local Users and Groups.
3. Then, click on Groups and right click on the Performance Log Users to click Add to Group.
4. After that click Add from the General tab.
5. Now, it is required to type the name of the user you wish to add.
6. You may also click Advanced to search the directory for a user to be added.
7. If you’ve done with this thing, click OK and click OK again to close the Performance Log Users property page.

Assign the Log on as a batch job user right to the Performance Log Users group
If you’re a member of the Performance Log Users group and you wish to initiate the data logging or modify Data Collectors Sets, the group must first be assigned the Log on as a batch job user right. To assign this user right, use the Local Security Policy snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

To assign the Log on as a batch job user right to the Performance Log Users group:
1. Click Start, click in the Start Search box, type secpol.msc, and then press ENTER. The Local Security Policy snap-in will open in Microsoft Management Console.
2. In the navigation pane, expand Local Policies and click User Rights Assignment.
3. In the console pane, right-click Log on as a batch job and then click Properties.
4. In the Properties page, click Add User or Group.
5. In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, click Object Types. Select Groups, and then click OK.
6. Type Performance Log Users in the Select Users or Groups dialog box, and then click OK.
7. Click OK again to close the property page.
Enable the File and Printer Sharing firewall exception on a remote system running Windows Vista
The File and Printer Sharing firewall exception in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 should be enabled on the destination computer before performance counters can be collected remotely.
Membership in the destination computer’s local Administrators group is required to change firewall settings.
How to enable the File and Printer Sharing firewall exception?
1. On the destination computer, click Start and then click Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel search box, type firewall.
3. In the search results, double-click Windows Firewall.
4. In Windows Firewall, click Change settings.
5. On the Exceptions tab, select the File and Printer Sharing check box.
How to enable the Remote Registry service?
Membership in the destination computer’s local Administrators group is required to complete this procedure.
To enable the Remote Registry service:
1. On the destination system, click Start.
2. In the Start Search text box, type compmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER. Microsoft Management Console (MMC) will start.
3. In the navigation tree, expand Services and Applications and click Services.
4. In the Services list, right-click Remote Registry, and then click Start.
Verify
In order to verify if the network performance counters are properly collected and displayed in a Performance Monitor graph, you can use Windows Reliability and Performance Monitor. At the same time, you can use the typeperf command to get the list of the available counters on the local system.
Membership in the local Administrators group is required to complete these procedures.
How to view counters in Performance Monitor?
1. First, click on Start, type perfmon.exe in the search box and pres the enter key.
2. Now, on the navigation pane, it is required to expand Monitoring Tools and then click Performance Monitor.
3. After that, it is required to click the Add button to open the list of available performance counters.
4. Then, click Help from the Add Counters dialog box to view more information on adding the counters.
5. Once you’ve done with adding the counters, it is required to click OK.
6. Then, verify that the performance counters you selected are displayed in the Performance Monitor graph.

To view a list of counters at the command prompt:
1. First open the Run Command as the administrator.
2. Then, in the command prompt type typeperf –qx and press the enter key.
3. After that, you can verify that the performance counter list contains the expected values.
4. Try it out!!!

Tips: How to check if your processor supports SLAT

As everyone knows, Windows Server 8 Beta is ready to arrive and available for evaluation as well. For installing Windows 8, Microsoft has listed the following system requirements out:
• Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
• RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
• Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
• Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device or higher

At the same time, some of the new Windows 8 features have some additional requirements. However, in this article, let’s discuss one of the specific requirements for the embedded Hyper-V feature that usually Windows 8 Client offers. We can use this to have a CPU with the Second Level Address Translation (SLAT) capabilities. The main thing we have to remember is that SLAT can also be enabled in the BIOS.
We should also remember that SLAT is a requirement from the Windows 8 Client perspective. Therefore, installing the Hyper-V role in the Windows 8 Client without having a CPU that supports SLAT isn’t possible.
Although SLAT will affect the VM performance while lacking, we can still run the Hyper-V role on a Windows 8 Server without SLAT.
Now, let’s have a glance about SLAT
Second Level Address Translation or SLAT is a better known technology that was applied on the Intel and the AMD processors.
The SLAT technology from Intel is represented as EPT (Extended Page Table). If you’ve any processor that supports virtualization, you can get this technology. The processors can be i7, i5, i3, Pentium G6950 and other appropriate Xeons as they support VT. Unfortunately, VT is not available in Core 2 based or other earlier Intel processors.
The same technology for AMD is represented as RVI (Rapid Virtualization Indexing) technology. It is available in their third generation Opteron processors codenamed Barcelona.
Now, let’s move to the title “How to check if your processor supports SLAT?”

In order to check this, we can go with the free tool called Windows Sysinternals Coreinfo (currently at v3.04). Using this tool, we can determine if your CPU supports SLAT. You can download Coreinfo from the official technet.microsoft website.
• Once the download process is finished, it is required to open the command prompt with the elevated credentials by clicking on Start -> type CMD, then right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator from the menu.
• Now, it is required to browse the location where you’ve saved Coreinfo and type coreinfo.exe –v
If your computer runs the CPU that supports SLAT, you can see an asterisk “*” next to EPT field as shown in the example below:

At the same time, if the computer’s processor doesn’t support SLAT, you can find a minus ‘-‘ symbol instead of asterisk ‘*’ as shown in the below example:

Note: If you run Coreinfo on an AMD based computer, we’ll get a value called NPT (Nested Page Tables) instead of EPT.
Once you confirm this thing, you can go ahead with installing Windows 8 Client/Server beta in your computer.

Google: Gmail Tab – the new feature rocks

We’ve been using the QWERTY keyboard unchanged from 1874. However, Google has introduced its new input method designed for the future. It is Gmail Tap for Android and iOS. If you watch the below video, you can understand the concept.

The Gmail Tab feature takes the keyboard from 26 keys to just two. Dots and dashes are used to represent the every single alphabet by simple patterns.

Once you come to know them, you’ll be able to type even without looking at the screen. You can ideally use this when you discreetly need to send mails. Besides, Google is introducing a new mode and multi-email.
